Responsible Budget Approved by General Assembly, Schmitt Says
HARRISBURG – The General Assembly today approved a responsible, no-tax-increase budget that respects taxpayers. In response, Rep. Lou Schmitt (R-Altoona), who serves on the Appropriations Committee, which oversees the budgeting process in the House, issued the following statement:
“The budget we approved is sensible and is very much in tune with the times. It also addresses the needs of today, while planning for the future.
“As Pennsylvanians, and our economy, continue on the long journey toward recovery, it is vitally important to include safeguards for the future. To that end, included in this budget is $2.52 billion that will be saved for future expenses, such as to offset tax increases, should the need arise.
“To address the needs of today, the budget provides increased funding for all levels of education, including a $300 million uptick in basic education funding. In a sense, this also plans for the future as we know the students of today will be the leaders of tomorrow and they must be afforded opportunities to succeed.
“To combat increasing crime, the budget promotes safe communities by allocating $30 million for violence intervention and prevention.”
