Quinn Hopeful Higher Education Boost in State Budget Will Prevent Tuition Increases
HARRISBURG – Rep. Marguerite Quinn (R-Bucks), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement after House passage of a 2018-19 state budget on Wednesday:
“This budget represents much good news for the people of the 143rd District and Bucks County, mainly because it doesn’t contain any new taxes or fees on families, senior citizens or businesses. But it does heavily invest in education to the tune of more than $14 billion. Those investments – from prekindergarten through higher education – will allow our schools to continue providing high-quality education for our students. Additionally, another $30 million will be geared toward career and technical education so that students can be trained for the careers of today and tomorrow.
“On the school safety front, I am pleased to see that $60 million is being directed to block grants that will allow school officials to use the funding as they see it. Whether they need school resource officers, metal detectors or specialized training, this new program will help offset those costs.
“Because we are giving state-related and state-owned universities at least a 3 percent boost in their state subsidies, I am very hopeful that the governing boards of these institutions will use that funding to keep tuition at their current levels.
“Overall, this budget is the product of many years of hard choices – choices that have put us in a better financial position so that we can fund critical state government services without further burdening taxpayers. I am optimistic it will be passed by the Senate and signed into law soon.”
