McGinnis: Wrong for Wolf to Ask Pennsylvanians to Pay More and Do With Less
HARRISBURG – Rep. John McGinnis (R-Blair) today joined his House Republican colleagues in rejecting Gov. Tom Wolf’s call for higher taxes during his 2016-17 budget address before a joint session of the General Assembly. The governor’s proposal would increase taxes by $2.7 billion.
Wolf’s spending plan would increase the Personal Income Tax by 11 percent and expand the sales tax to include a number of items that are currently tax exempt. In addition, the governor would impose a 6.5 percent severance tax on the struggling natural gas industry.
McGinnis issued the following statement regarding the governor’s proposed budget:
“With a proposed increase of 8 percent over the budget passed in December, the main takeaway from the governor’s budget address is that he remains steadfast in his belief that taxpayers aren’t giving enough and state government should be spending more of the money they earn.
“Illogically, the governor has diagnosed a financial structural deficit and has prescribed more spending as its solution. While the governor may be focused on the state’s budget, he seems to be giving no regard to the budgets of any of the families in the Commonwealth. It is simply outlandish of him to ask Pennsylvanians to pay more and do with less.
“In walking around the district and talking with constituents recently, not one person said that their taxes should be raised or thought that they should curtail their spending so Gov. Wolf can increase his.
“In the end, the budget address showed that what the governor lacks in budgeting skills he tries to make up with insolence by scolding the Legislature for not approving his tax-and-spend proposals.”
