Governor’s Spending Levels Unsustainable for Long-Term Fiscal Health, Mehaffie Says
HARRISBURG – Gov. Tom Wolf today proposed spending 16.6% more in 2022-23 than the current fiscal year, which is untenable for the future, Rep. Tom Mehaffie (R-Dauphin) said.
“The governor talked about spending much more for education, human services and other worthy programs, but the amounts he put forward are simply not realistic,” Mehaffie said. “The budget address is a starting point. We now turn to the hard work of crafting a budget with spending levels that don’t overburden our children and grandchildren.”
Mehaffie expressed frustration that Wolf yet again proposed raiding the Pennsylvania Race Horse Development Trust Fund to pay for new scholarships in higher education. While Mehaffie supports additional scholarship dollars, he is vehemently opposed to the money originating from a program that supports the Commonwealth’s horsemen and horsewomen. The trust fund is supported by revenue from slot machines at casinos, not tax dollars.
