House Passes Keller’s Resolution Commemorating 100th Pennsylvania Farm Show
12/16/2015
HARRISBURG – A resolution commemorating the 100th Pennsylvania Farm Show, sponsored by Rep. Mark Keller (R-Perry/Cumberland), was unanimously approved by the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

The Pennsylvania Farm Show is the nation’s largest indoor agricultural event, featuring 6,000 animals, 10,000 competitive exhibits, and 300 commercial exhibitors. According to the Hershey Harrisburg Regional Visitors Bureau, the 2015 farm show had an estimated economic impact of $95 million to the south-central Pennsylvania region, supporting more than 18,000 jobs over the course of the week-long event.

“The farm show is truly one of Pennsylvania’s finest jewels,” said Keller during his remarks in the House chamber. “This year is special, because it marks 100 years of this great event, which brings farmers, businessmen, tradesmen and observers from across the globe to central Pennsylvania to celebrate agriculture and its impact on our culture and society.”

The Pennsylvania Farm Show was organized in 1916 by Agriculture Secretary Charles Patton, in an effort to bring trade associations, businesses and farmers together to share ideas and information on agriculture and economic trends. Until the 1930s, the farm show was held at various locations throughout Harrisburg in order to effectively host the increase in attendees and exhibits. In 1929, in order to create a centralized location that could address the event’s growth, the General Assembly appropriated $1.34 million toward the construction of the first Pennsylvania Farm Show complex.

Keller is a member of the State Farm Products Show Commission, which oversees the annual event.

The 100th farm show will take place Jan. 9-16, 2016, at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center along North Cameron Street in Harrisburg.
