Kauffman Votes in Favor of Pro-Taxpayer Budget Plan
Plan would limit the growth of government and avoid widespread tax increases
HARRISBURG – Rep. Rob Kauffman (R-Franklin) today joined the majority of his colleagues in the House to vote in favor of
House Bill 1460, a pro-taxpayer plan that reflects the desire of the public to limit the growth of government spending and avoid massive, broad-based tax increases on working men and women.
Pennsylvania has now gone more than 160 days without a state budget in place. Many schools and human service providers have been forced to take out loans in order to remain operational, and some organizations have had to reduce staff, cut hours or close their doors.
“This budget impasse has been frustrating for many Pennsylvanians who expect an annual budget to be in place by June 30 each year,” said Kauffman. “I share that frustration, as I have voted on multiple occasions to get needed funding into our communities. At every juncture of this budget impasse, my constituents have said they cannot afford any new taxes. Today House Republicans once again stood for a reasonable spending plan that would not require new broad-based taxes.”
“The budget I voted in favor of today respects the financial position the state is currently in by keeping the growth of government spending to a minimum while still investing in key sectors, such as education and human services,” continued Kauffman.
House Bill 1460 contains increases to education, including $100 million more for basic education, $30 million more for special education, $25 million more for Pre-K Counts and $5 million more for Head Start. It also includes increases in funding for home and community-based services, services for persons with disabilities, the state’s veterans homes and long-term care.
“I realize there are competing budget plans before the General Assembly at the moment; however, I think the financially prudent plan we passed today charts the appropriate course to take, and I am hopeful we will gain the support of the Senate and governor to make this plan a reality.”
House Bill 1460 passed the House by a vote of 115-86.
