Benninghoff Legislation to Protect Juror Privacy Gains Committee Support
HARRISBURG – Rep. Kerry Benninghoff (R-Centre/Mifflin) announced today that his legislation to protect the privacy of jurors passed the House Judiciary Committee with unanimous, bi-partisan support.
“Many jurors preside over high-profile cases, and they have the right to be protected,” Benninghoff said. “Ensuring their safety as they fulfill their civic duty is common sense.”
House Bill 1626 would exempt the names and addresses of jurors from public access, unless otherwise ordered by the courts. Under Benninghoff’s proposal, government agencies that maintain juror records would not be permitted to release any identifying information to the public.
The legislation does not preclude individual jurors from releasing such information voluntarily. The bill can now be considered by the House as a whole.
