Rader Attempts to Provide Human Service Funding By Trying to Override the Governor’s Veto
HARRISBURG – Rep. Jack Rader Jr. (R-Monroe) voted on Tuesday in favor of overriding the governor’s veto of several line items in this year’s budget in an attempt to provide funding to vital human services and educational programs.
However, the veto attempts failed along party lines.
He issued the following statement after the votes:
“Human service programs are critical and valuable to those most in need, and ensuring they are adequately funded should be our priority. On Tuesday, we tried to help the people of Pennsylvania by making sure these services would continue to be available.
“The Legislature passed an on-time and balanced budget that funded the core functions of government without raising taxes on Pennsylvanians. Our budget included increased funding for education and human service programs. Over two-thirds of the 401 line items in our budget funded programs at the same level or a higher level than proposed by the governor. Instead of only vetoing the parts of the budget where he and the Legislature disagreed, the governor vetoed the entire budget.
“Many human service agencies will be running out of funding in the coming weeks. Last night, we voted to override the veto on only items where the legislature and the governor agree. I am disappointed by many of my colleagues’ refusal to release this important funding. These non-controversial human service programs deserve bipartisan support.”
