Governor Vetoes Sarah’s and Emily’s Law, Maloney’s Life-Saving Public Safety Bill
HARRISBURG – Rep. David Maloney (R-Berks) today said he was “very disappointed” in Gov. Tom Wolf’s inexplicable veto of commonsense legislation to enhance bicycle and pedestrian safety across the Commonwealth.
For the past six years, Maloney has championed legislation to allow townships and municipalities to construct protected bike lanes. Protected bike lanes are a simple concept: they're like sidewalks for bikes.
They use planters, curbs, parked cars or posts to separate bike and auto traffic on busy streets and are essential to building a full network of bike-friendly routes. Once that network is built, it makes riding a bike a more pleasant and practical way for people to travel.
“The governor’s veto today leaves in place PennDOT’s antiquated regulations and prevents our municipalities and cities from moving forward with practical, live-saving traffic safety solutions,” Maloney said. “
House Bill 140, which was named for the cycling deaths of two young women commuting to work, Susan Hicks of Pittsburgh and Emily Fredricks of Philadelphia - two women whose lives could have been saved by protected bike lanes in these traffic-congested, Democrat-run cities.”
The veto also kills a Senate amendment to create a position responsible for prosecuting all attacks on riders of SEPTA, the greater Philadelphia area’s public transportation network since Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner spends more time prosecuting cops and releasing murderers than protecting honest citizens.
