Scialabba Comments on Governor Shapiro’s Budget Proposal
HARRISBURG – Today, Rep. Stephenie Scialabba (R-Butler) shared her thoughts on Gov. Josh Shapiro’s budget proposal and accompanying address for the 2023-24 fiscal year. The governor’s proposed budget spends nearly $45.8 billion, an increase of 6% ($2.5 billion) over the current year’s enacted budget.
Her statement is as follows:
“We heard a lot of ideas today. Some I really agree with, like funding for state police and our first responders. Others I disagree with, like funding for the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, which harms our energy industry, including workers and producers, as well as our economy. There are items that are a good starting point but that we need to take a step further, such as giving deemed approval to permit applications that are not timely processed rather than a returned application fee.
“I also think the proposal neglects a bigger need – shrinking our government. I’ve said time and time again that the government has too many hands and they’re too big. The proposal also allocates funds that should be returned to taxpayers or used to guard against tax hikes and the rainy days in our future. Smaller government and less spending means more money in taxpayers’ wallets, which is exactly where it belongs.”
The governor’s address is just the beginning of the annual budgetary process. Starting Tuesday, March 20, the House Appropriations Committee will hold hearings taking a closer look at the precise details of the governor’s plan. For a schedule and live streaming of the hearings, go to
