Rapp Resolution Recognizes PA Apraxia Awareness Day For Third Consecutive Year
5/13/2015
HARRISBURG—Sponsored by Rep. Kathy Rapp (R-Warren/Crawford/Forest), a resolution officially recognizing Thursday, May 14, 2015, as Apraxia Awareness Day in Pennsylvania unanimously passed the state House on Wednesday.

Final passage of House Resolution 335 marks the third consecutive year that Rapp’s measure has been unanimously adopted to raise awareness of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), which is a neurological disorder where children have problems making speech sounds because the brain has difficulty planning the motor and muscle movements needed for speech.

“While both the causes and frequency of CAS are not well understood, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association reports that the number of children diagnosed with CAS is on the rise,” said Rapp. “I am extremely honored to once again successfully advance this resolution to do whatever I can to speak out about this extremely serious condition that is silencing far too many of our brightest children.”

Rapp encourages Pennsylvania citizens to seek out more information online at Apraxia-Kids.org.

“When CAS is most severe, children struggle to make sounds,” said Rapp. “Children with a moderate or milder form struggle with syllables and words. Most importantly, the latest research also shows that children with CAS have more success when they receive frequent and intensive treatment Passage of this resolution is all about raising statewide awareness, so these children can receive all the love, encouragement and support they need to become overcomers of childhood apraxia.”
