Culver Recognizes ‘Women’s Lung Health Week’ in Pennsylvania
HARRISBURG – In an effort to promote lung health awareness across the state, Rep. Lynda Schlegel Culver (R-Northumberland/Snyder) introduced
House Resolution 302, which designates the week of May 10-16, as “Women’s Lung Health Week” in Pennsylvania.
“Every five minutes, a woman in the U.S. is diagnosed with lung cancer,” Culver said while addressing her House colleagues on the floor.
“Lung cancer is the No. 1 cancer killer of women in our country, and it surpassed breast cancer as the leading cause of cancer death with women back in 1987,” she continued. “I introduced this resolution because I believe that advocacy and awareness will result in increased, better treatment for women with lung cancer and other lung diseases, which could ultimately save lives.”
Culver explained the American Lung Association is leading a national movement, titled, “Lung Force,” an initiative to make lung cancer history by uniting women to stand together with a collective strength and determination to lead the fight against lung cancer and for lung health. “I encourage people in our community to participate in the Lung Force initiative’s ‘Turquoise Takeover’ next week by wearing turquoise and doing all they can to build awareness of lung cancer throughout our state,” she noted.

“The lung cancer death rate in women has almost doubled over the last 37 years, and I hope that we can begin to turn those numbers around moving forward,” Culver said. “I encourage all Pennsylvanians to learn more about detection and treatment of lung cancer.”
