Ryan Offers Moving Remarks Upon Passage of Shawn's Law Bill Now on Way to Governor
Sep. 21, 2021 / Embed
The House recently passed Shawn’s Law – legislation that would make it a felony for individuals to intentionally aid or solicit another to commit suicide. Two years ago, 25-year-old Shawn Shatto of York County took her own life at the direction of individuals in a web chatroom who, among other things, instructed her on how to prepare the deadly poison. After ingesting the poison, she told the others she was terrified of dying. Yet, nobody sought or encouraged Shawn to seek help. One even wished her “safe travels.” Shawn’s family has suffered greatly following their devastating loss. I cannot fathom the extreme callousness for human life exhibited by those in that chatroom. House Bill 184 (Shawn’s Law) will severely penalize those who coax another into taking their own life, even if they are not successful. Prior to the House vote on the bill, I delivered a message for Shawn and her loving family in the House chamber.
