HARRISBURG — Legislation sponsored by Rep. Kathy Rapp (R-Warren/Crawford/Forest), which would eliminate veterans’ disability payments from income eligibility under the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program (
House Bill 683), was unanimously passed by the Pennsylvania Senate on Wednesday.
“For far too many veterans, the inclusion of these legitimately earned disability payments as income unfairly disqualifies them from receiving property tax or rent relief under the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program,” said Rapp. “Thankfully, the need for this legislation was brought to my attention by a disabled Warren County veteran. As always, I am deeply humbled to advance legislation that in some way can help to ease the financial burdens that impact our military heroes and their families across this Commonwealth.”
House Bill 683 now awaits the governor’s signature. The Property Tax/Rent Rebate program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians who are 65 years or older, widows and widowers 50 years or older, and those 18 years or older with permanently disabilities. Eligible participants can receive a rebate of up to $650 based on their rent or property taxes paid during the previous year.
“Without question, the most important purpose of House Bill 683 is not tax reform,” said Rapp. “This legislation was introduced to honor the sacrifices of Pennsylvania’s disabled veterans by ensuring they receive each and every benefit or advantage that is available to them due to their selfless and meritorious service to our nation.”
