HARRISBURG – Rep. Lori Mizgorski (R-Allegheny) is joining Speaker of the House Bryan Cutler (R-Lancaster) in calling for an audit of the state’s election results prior to them being certified by the Department of State.
“This is not about who won or lost but about restoring faith in the foundation of our government. We all want to know our votes were fairly counted in this election and we want to ensure they will be fairly counted in all future elections,” Mizgorski said. “There was a great deal of confusion leading up to this election. In order for the citizens of our Commonwealth and our country to move forward, we must ensure the validity of the results.”
Lawmakers are calling for the audit after several concerns were raised related to this year’s election. Mail-in ballots that had defects were handled differently in various counties in the Commonwealth due to guidance provided by the Pennsylvania secretary of State. Some counties contacted voters who had voted by mail, alerted them to a defect in their ballot and sought to have the voters fix the defect. The same process was not carried out in other counties, which raises questions about the fair and equal treatment of votes. In those instances where counties contacted voters about their defective mail-in ballots, poll watchers should have been able to view and verify the process. They were denied that opportunity, which casts a shadow of doubt over the handling of those ballots.
“Voting is one of our most basic rights and responsibilities as Americans. We owe it to our forefathers who established our system of government, and to our veterans, service members and activists who have fought to secure this right for all citizens to ensure the sanctity of this process,” Mizgorski concluded.
