HARRISBURG – Rep. Rosemary M. Brown (R-Monroe/Pike) released the following statement regarding proposed ballot questions, who is able to vote at the polls in the May 18 primary elections and the importance of continued governmental branch inclusivity when decisions are being made that will affect the entirety of the Commonwealth.
“Since the beginning of this pandemic, I have always made it clear that when unilateral decisions are made via executive order or without the inclusion of the General Assembly for an extended period of time, a void is established between the people and our state leaders, specifically with the executive branch. The founders of our nation and our Commonwealth established checks and balances that would prevent one branch of government from having too much power and control and allow all branches to function harmoniously.
“We have seen throughout this pandemic that checks and balances have been ignored as we have watched the executive branch use its power unilaterally long term and leave out the voices of the General Assembly, which most importantly removes the voices of Pennsylvania citizens. It is because of this that I supported
Senate Bill 2, which puts on the May 18 primary ballot two questions focused on how emergency declarations would operate in the future should they be needed. There should never be a reason to ignore state residents or those who they elect to represent them for excessive periods of time, especially when the decisions being made are not ones that should be taken lightly.
“I, along with the rest of our Legislature, are encouraging residents to let their voices be heard when they go to the polls on May 18. While this is a primary election where normally only registered Republicans and Democrats can vote for their candidate, it’s important to know and share throughout the community that registered Independents are able to go to their polling place to vote on the proposed ballot questions.
“It is time for everyone to have representation and a seat at the table when proposing and enacting solutions that will affect the entirety of Pennsylvania. Our state cannot continue on the path it has been navigating for the past year. We need to work together, all branches of government, through the people, to forge a better, brighter, and more innovative future for all Pennsylvanians.”
