HARRISBURG – Rep. Matthew Dowling (R-Fayette/Somerset) today issued the following statement about his “no” vote on state funding for the University of Pittsburgh:
“I am deeply disappointed by having to vote against funding for the University of Pittsburgh and the students and families who may experience higher tuition rates because of my vote.
“However, I am downright appalled by the fetal tissue research being conducted by the university and cannot, in good conscience, support the institution financially in ANY way. While officials claim our state money is not used in this research, it doesn’t matter. The atrocities done to these aborted babies in the name of research is deplorable, grotesque and morally offensive to me and so many of the people I represent.
“Sending even one penny of taxpayer money to a school that participates in such research is disrespectful to these aborted babies who never had a chance to live, to grow and to enjoy the life given to them by our Creator.”
Senate Bill 266 allocates nearly $155 million to the state-related university for the 2020-21 fiscal year.
