HARRISBURG – The General Assembly approved today a responsible budget that addresses the needs of today while planning for the future. In response, Rep. Jesse Topper (R-Bedford/Franklin/Fulton), who sits on the House Appropriations Committee, which investigates yearly budget requests and creates budgets, issued the following statement:
“There has been a push from the other side to spend all money the state has on hand to stimulate the economy. Money handed out by the government won’t drive the economy. People spending money that they earned through work will do more to rebuild than any stimulus check.
“With that in mind, the budget we approved places money into savings, and also provides for the core functions of government. This budget addresses the needs of today while planning for the future by placing $2.52 billion in a protected savings account. Our economy, as well as all Pennsylvanians, has been through a lot this past year. While we are optimistic, we don’t know what the future holds and we must prepare the best we know how – by saving money now that can be applied to budgets down the road. It’s the responsible thing to do.
