HARRISBURG – Legislative action to allow school boards greater latitude for school safety discussions has passed in the state House as part of an ancillary bill to the state budget, said Rep. Mindy Fee (R-Manheim). The bill has been sent to the governor for his consideration.

Fee authored legislation, House Bill 2327, that would allow public school entities, such as school boards, to go into private, executive session for school safety discussions. That bill passed the House by unanimous vote on June 11. The language of Fee’s bill has been incorporated into the omnibus Public School Code, House Bill 1448, a bill that is a supplement to each year’s general appropriations budget bill.

“School districts across Pennsylvania are developing and implementing strategies and security plans to help increase school safety and keep students safe in the event of an intruder entering the campus,” Fee said. “As security plans work better when an adversary does not know what you are planning, this legislation will grant public school entities the ability to freely debate and develop security plans that address the needs and weaknesses of their schools without disclosing their plans to would-be attackers.”

The Public School Code bill passed overwhelmingly in the House and is expected to garner Senate passage and be signed into law by the governor.
