HARRISBURG – Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon) issued the following statement after the governor’s administration recently developed and sent a school closing checklist to help schools shut their doors. Several schools across Pennsylvania are in danger of closing due to Gov. Tom Wolf’s $3 billion cut to state education funding.
“I am appalled by Gov. Wolf’s decision to instruct schools on how to shut down. Pennsylvania’s children do not deserve to be pawns in his political game – and their education should never be at risk. Instead of spending time and resources to contact schools, our governor should simply release the remaining funds in order to avoid a catastrophe.
“The money to keep our schools open is sitting in the Treasury, and Gov. Wolf is the only person who can bring this to an end. We sent the governor a budget on Dec. 24 that included historically high levels of education funding. However, Gov. Wolf cut half of the Basic Education Funding allocation schools would receive for 2015-16.
“It is imperative that our governor release this funding immediately. Funding education is one of the core responsibilities of state government, and Gov. Wolf is failing in his task. I would urge the governor to immediately restore funding to Pennsylvania’s schools. Our schools should not be in jeopardy.”
