HARRISBURG – The York County House Republican delegation voted today to support an investigation by the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts to look into allegations made in the past few months against Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane.
House Resolution 659 authored by Rep. Garth Everett (R-Lycoming/Union) passed on a vote of 170-12.
The House of Representatives is charged with the constitutional duty to investigate whether inappropriate conduct by public officials, including the attorney general, merits impeachment. Recently, Kane has been the subject of a grand jury investigation and subsequently has had several criminal charges filed against her, including perjury. She has since had her law license suspended by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
State Reps. Seth Grove (R-Dover), Kate Klunk (R-Hanover), Kristin Phillips-Hill (R-York Township), Mike Regan (R-Dillsburg), Keith Gillespie (R-Hellam) and Stan Saylor (R-Red Lion) issued the following statement after the vote:
“We believe the strong bipartisan vote by the full House indicates this is not a partisan action, but a good-faith effort to bring all of the facts of the allegations against the attorney general to light. The subcommittee is charged with investigating these allegations and will make a full report to the House Judiciary Committee. The House Judiciary Committee would then review the report and decide how to move forward with the results. We support this action as these matters are serious in nature. We will await the report on this investigation.”
This House investigation will be broader in scope than the limited action recently taken by the Senate. While the Senate’s investigation focused on the suspension of Kane’s law license, the House subcommittee can conduct a full inquiry into all allegations against Kane. Currently, the limited Senate investigation has stalled in that chamber.
The delegation said they are confident in the professionalism of the House subcommittee, which is chaired by Reps. Todd Stephens (R-Montgomery) and Tim Briggs (D-Montgomery).
