HARRISBURG – On Wednesday, the House Human Services Committee unanimously passed two bills being sponsored by Rep. Aaron Kaufer (R-Luzerne).

“We need to streamline our addiction services, including both gambling and tobacco addictions,” Kaufer said. “We need to work smarter, not harder, by having less bureaucrats in Harrisburg passing money back and forth and driving more money locally to provide for more available treatment in our region.”

House Bill 1843 would place the operation of the state’s compulsive gambling program under Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs. This is currently being done, but needs to be put in law.

House Bill 1844 would change the Department of Health to Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs with regard to the implementation and administration of tobacco use prevention and cessation efforts.
