HARRISBURG – State Rep. Marcia Hahn (R-Bushkill Township) joined the majority of her House colleagues in supporting
House Bill 2121, the general appropriations portion of the 2018-19 state budget package of legislation.
Hahn issued the following statement upon passage of the legislation:
“When the House Appropriations Committee, of which I am a member, began the budget process in February, our goal was to continue on the prosperous path that has seen our economy begin to turn around. Today, the House overwhelmingly advanced a budget bill that includes no new taxes and supports state government’s core functions.
“For the first time, support for PreK-12 education funding statewide would total more than $12 billion. The Bethlehem, Nazareth, Northampton and Pen Argyl Area school districts would see their funding increase, and career and technical education in Pennsylvania would receive an additional $30 million.
“This budget bill reflects the inescapable reality that we must pay added attention to school safety. With that in mind, $60 million will be allocated to our schools in the form of a block grant for which they need merely apply. Doing it in this manner allows them to make choices in how they want to address their individual safety needs as opposed to mandating a statewide blueprint.
“Emergency medical service providers that are struggling to make ends meet would receive additional money to compensate for reimbursement shortfalls. Also, the threat posed by the spotted lanternfly, which impacts both agriculture and business, would be addressed through an additional $2.5 million appropriation for the Department of Agriculture.
“House Bill 2121 passed by a 188-10 vote, signifying a rarely-seen level of consensus. With the ability to replenish the Rainy Day Fund - something Pennsylvania hasn’t done in more than 10 years – we are beginning to see the results of sound fiscal policy and responsible spending practices.”
