HARRISBURG - Rep. David Millard (R-Columbia) today voted in favor of a state budget that prioritizes education, public safety, and saving for the future. The 2018-19 Pennsylvania budget would spend $32.7 billion, a conservative 1.7 percent boost over the current year budget, which is an increase below the rate of inflation.
Millard released this statement after the budget bill passed overwhelmingly in the state House:
“Nationally, the economy is quite strong and unemployment is at record lows. That news has, correspondingly, led to a strong turnaround for revenues in Pennsylvania. That type of financial resurgence has enabled the Legislature to pass a budget bill with no tax hikes and with expanded funding for several important measures.
“The House-passed budget will increase funding for basic, special and pre-K education to the highest levels in Pennsylvania history; boost funding for higher education, which includes state-related universities, State System of Higher Education schools (like Bloomsburg University) and community colleges, by roughly 3 percent; create a new block grant program for schools to institute stronger safety measures; and dedicate an additional $30 million for career and technical education.
“Also included in the budget is an increase of $4 million for EMS agencies; funding to train an additional 285 state police troopers; money to serve an additional 965 people living with intellectual disabilities; and funds to provide services to an additional 800 families affected by the opioid epidemic.
“I was pleased to vote for a responsible budget plan that came about as a result of an improved economy and sensible spending.”
