HARRISBURG – Rep. Craig Staats (R-Bucks) released the following statement today after Gov. Tom Wolf partially vetoed
House Bill 1460, the budget sent to him by the Legislature last week.
“I am disappointed and frustrated by Gov. Wolf’s decision to use the line-item veto on the budget sent to him by the Legislature last week. This morning, he vetoed key line items that funded emergency health programs, agriculture, community and economic development and many other previously agreed-upon items. Once again, the governor is using the line-item veto to pick winners and losers throughout this process.
“This was a good budget that provided increased education funding without broad-based tax increases. The reality is that Gov. Wolf wants to raise taxes on the people of our state in order to achieve his priorities, which include massive additional spending.
“However, I am pleased that the governor has finally realized that he cannot hold struggling schools, counties and human service agencies hostage during this impasse. My colleagues and I have been calling for the release of this critical funding for months, and I am glad that schools will be able to open next week.
“The fight against higher taxes continues, and I remain committed to working hard to ensure that the people of our state are not hit with broad-based tax increases. I am looking forward to returning to Harrisburg and passing a fair and reasonable budget as soon as possible.”
