Dec. 29, 2015
GROVE CITY – Rep. Tedd Nesbit (R-Mercer/Butler) today responded to the announcement by Gov. Tom Wolf to line-item veto parts of the 2015-16 state budget that was sent to his desk on Dec. 24:
“Throughout this entire process, the governor has continued to demand more in huge income and sales tax increases from the people of Pennsylvania. Although he doesn’t ever specifically mention the need to raise taxes in his press statements or social media posts, that’s the only way his increases can be paid for. It’s time that he stop demanding more from our hard-working families and senior citizens and be respectful of those who pay the bills.
“Throughout this impasse, my constituents continue to tell me they are tapped out and cannot afford more in broad-based taxes like a sales and income tax. Our people are hurting, especially with recent manufacturing job losses regionally at GE or Joy Industries, or seniors on fixed incomes. Now is not the time to ask for more. These people cannot afford to pay more for the governor’s large appetite for spending, and I can’t ask them to make such sacrifices so that schools in other parts of the state can benefit.
“While I appreciate that the governor is finally releasing some of the hostages, he is only allocating six months’ worth of funding for counties, human services and schools, when they deserve their full amounts. Using them as leverage continues to be unacceptable.
“I’m ready and willing to get back to work to finalize a budget that’s responsible and respectful to the taxpayers of our state, while meeting our critical needs. It’s incredibly frustrating that we have two different ideas of how we can get there, but we need to put the needs of the people first.”
