HARRISBURG – In an effort to encourage Pennsylvanians to give back to the veterans who have served our country, the state House today approved a resolution sponsored by Rep. Kate Harper (R-Montgomery) designating Friday, Nov. 6, as “Pennsylvania Veterans Day of Caring.”

“In two weeks, we will mark Veterans Day as a day to honor the men and women who served our country, but so many of us do that from afar, by attending parades or other community events. For some, the day is nothing more than a passing thought,” Harper said. “The Pennsylvania Veterans Day of Caring is designed to encourage everyone to be proactive in showing our veterans how much we appreciate them by lending them a helping hand. That can mean helping with household chores or yard work, or even just sitting with them to listen to their stories and experiences.”

Harper first introduced the resolution two years ago after receiving the suggestion from one of her constituents, David Kobe of Upper Gwynedd. Mr. Kobe took it upon himself, after noting a veteran whose yard was in need of some maintenance following Hurricane Sandy, to clean up the leaves, branches and other debris for the man.

“A simple act of kindness can make such a difference in the life of a friend or neighbor,” Harper said. “I hope everyone will take a little time out of their day to do something nice for a veteran.”

House Resolution 557 was approved unanimously.
