HARRISBURG – State Rep. Sandra Major (R-Susquehanna/Wayne) today voted against the governor’s latest proposal to raise taxes on working men and women in the Commonwealth in order to increase government spending. She issued this statement following the vote:
“Today marks Day 99 of the state budget impasse and the second time the state House has voted down a plan by the governor to increase taxes on the people and businesses of Pennsylvania.
“His desire to increase the Personal Income Tax by 16 percent would take hundreds of dollars out of the pockets of our working men and women and make it costlier for small businesses to operate in the Commonwealth.
“Furthermore, his additional tax on the natural gas industry would make Pennsylvania the most expensive state in the country to drill, which would reduce job creation and all the economic gains we have experienced from this industry. Pennsylvania needs to get back in the business of attracting companies to our state, not taxing them away.
“I am hopeful after today’s vote the governor finally realizes support for broad-based tax increases is simply not there. We need to go back to the drawing board and work on a solution that funds our core government responsibilities, increases spending in key areas (such as education) and addresses our public pension crisis. The governor has already had two such plans cross his desk. Perhaps after today he will take a more serious look at those plans and rethink his commitment to instituting record tax hikes.
“I look forward to the next step in the process and in reaching a final budget agreement that will garner the needed support in both the House and Senate.”
