HARRISBURG –Rep. Ron Marsico (R-Dauphin) issued the following statement in regard to the tax vote taken today:

“Today we had the choice of whether or not to pass legislation that proposed dramatic tax increases. I did not support this for obvious reasons. Massively higher taxes are not good for Pennsylvania families or employers.

“This budget proposal included a significant increase in the Personal Income Tax (PIT). This would be devastating to the hard-working families and small business owners in the Commonwealth. It’s as simple as that.

“It was argued today that our current PIT is lower than the states that surround us. However, Pennsylvania does not have standard deduction or personal exemptions that most other state have, so the taxable income is higher in Pennsylvania than in most states.

“Today’s vote reflects the fact that the people of Pennsylvania are not in favor of a 16 percent increase in the PIT and 14.7 percent total severance tax, which would be the highest in the nation. We need to continue to support our small businesses in order to improve our economy and decrease our unemployment rate. Pennsylvania’s small businesses can’t afford a tax increase and neither can Pennsylvanians.”

The final vote on Amendment 03468 to House Bill 283 failed by a vote of 127-73.
