HARRISBURG – After House Democrats denied access to the public and Republican counterparts to their first press conference of the session Thursday, House Republican Leader Bryan Cutler (R-Lancaster) issued the following statement:

“On the first day of a new session, Rep. McClinton and House Democrats today hid in the shadows to avoid public scrutiny over their non-existent, but self-proclaimed, legislative majority.

“House Democrats and their leadership team cannot have their cake and eat it too: They either believe in transparency or they don’t. A vacancy exists in the House resulting in an equal, majority-less split of 101-101, or it doesn’t. They either respect peaceful transitions of power and institutional norms, or they don’t.

“While attempting a paperwork insurrection today as part of a selfish power grab for a majority that literally does not exist, House Democrats have made up fake office titles, laid claims to power they do not have, and shut out the public from scrutiny over their claims.

“Unlike our leadership events in the past week, which were publicly live-streamed and open to all media, this press event was a failure of leadership and an affront to open and participatory government that people should expect from their duly elected leaders.”
