HARRISBURG – Rep. Jason Ortitay (R-Washington/Allegheny) today commended the House and the Senate on passing a fiscally responsible $30.18 billion state spending plan that increases funding for education without any new or increased taxes.
The balanced budget was passed by the House and the Senate, and is now awaiting the signature of Gov. Tom Wolf. After today’s Senate vote, Ortitay made the following statement:
“Shortly after taking office, Gov. Wolf asked the Legislature to pass an unrealistic spending plan which included massive tax hikes to support a one-year, 16 percent climb in government spending.
“As someone who was elected to be a good fiscal steward of taxpayer dollars, I refused to ask taxpayers to foot the bill for such an unsustainable plan. It was time for government to cut waste, fraud and abuse; find solutions; and live within our means.
“Today, a good, balanced spending plan that respects taxpayers is on its way to the governor’s desk. This budget moves Pennsylvania forward by making historic investments in education, continuing to fund programs that serve our most needy citizens and holding the line on taxes. This budget protects Pennsylvania’s hard-working taxpayers.
“I urge our governor to uphold his constitutional obligation and sign this budget into law. ‘Government that works,’ ‘schools that teach’ and jobs that pay’ require a budget that is signed.”
