HARRISBURG – Rep. Bud Cook (R-Greene/Washington) issued the following statement in response to Gov. Josh Shapiro’s $45.8 billion budget proposal for the 2023-24 fiscal year:
“For the last several years we have worked hard to build up the Commonwealth’s Rainy Day Fund as a means to insulate taxpayers against severe economic downturn or other emergencies. My biggest concern with the governor’s proposal is that it will spend through the state’s reserve funds and Rainy Day Fund within three years and five years, respectively. This is not in the best interest of our taxpayers or our economy.
“Fortunately, the governor’s budget plan is simply a starting point for negotiations that will take place over the next few months. I will stand strong against any plan that irresponsibly directs our emergency funds to new program spending. Economists are predicting turbulent times ahead. We must be prepared.”
