HARRISBURG – State Rep. Sheryl M. Delozier (R-Cumberland) issued a statement detailing her reaction to today’s budget address by Gov. Josh Shapiro for the 2023-24 fiscal year:
“Today, Gov. Shapiro presented a $45.8 billion plan for our Commonwealth that deserves careful consideration. The governor’s budget plan includes many worthwhile proposals like probation reform, which I have been a long-time advocate for; supporting police through the addition of four new state trooper classes; and tax credits for nurses, law enforcement and teachers. My main concern with his proposal is the increase in spending from this current year by 6%. This will deplete the Rainy Day Fund in five years and the Commonwealth’s reserves in three years,” said Delozier. “With that in mind, the hard work of creating a balanced budget begins today.
"Determining the fiscal viability of his ideas is why we hold the upcoming series of Appropriations Committee hearings. From high-achieving, safe schools, to funding our police and providing opportunities for every Pennsylvanian to thrive in family-sustaining careers, we share many of the same goals. However, I believe the best way to achieve these goals and turn them into a reality for all our citizens does not happen by adding new government programs, spending more than we have and depleting our reserve funds, but to recognize we need to live within our budget. I look forward to doing my part to advance responsible solutions and priorities over the next several months.”
