HARRISBURG – The Monroe County House Delegation today voted in favor of legislation, introduced as an amendment that would cut property taxes for all Pennsylvanians in its first year of implementation. The measure passed by a vote of 105-86.
The Monroe County delegation – State Reps. Rosemary Brown (R-189), David Parker (R-115) and Jack Rader (R-176) – issued the following statement:
“We are all strong supporters of school property tax elimination. However, today we had an opportunity to move that debate forward by voting for legislation that, while not eliminating property taxes, would provide significant school property tax relief.
“This is an example of the school property tax relief the average homeowner in the Monroe County school districts could see based on the 2012-13 tax year.
• East Stroudsburg Area – 40 percent reduction.
• Pleasant Valley – 45 percent reduction.
• Pocono Mountain – 40 percent reduction.
• Stroudsburg Area - 40 percent reduction.
“In contrast to the governor’s plan, the legislation we voted for this week dramatically cuts property taxes for all Pennsylvania property owners.
“The legislation changes the state’s Personal Income Tax from 3.07 percent to 3.7 percent, and the Sales and Use Tax from 6 percent to 7 percent. And, it ensures that every single dollar generated through these tax changes will be used to reduce property taxes. Not one dollar of new revenue would be kept by the state for additional budget items.
“The bill now moves to the Senate for further consideration. We encourage our constituents to contact senators across the state to communicate the importance of this issue. We look forward to this bill continuing through the legislative process.”
