HARRISBURG – The state House voted this week in favor of two bills which would reduce the size of the General Assembly, members of the York County Republican House Delegation today said. Reps. Seth Grove (R-Dover), Stan Saylor (R-Red Lion), Mike Regan (R-Dillsburg), Keith Gillespie (R-Hellam), Kate Klunk (R-Hanover) and Kristin Phillips-Hill (R-York Township), all voted in favor of
House Bills 153 and
384, which would ultimately reduce the membership of the state House from 203 to 151 and the Senate membership from 50 to 37, respectively.
The lawmakers released the following statement regarding the legislation:
“One of the requests we hear most from people across York County is that they want to see more efficiency from our state government. Tuesday’s votes show that members of the state House are listening to those concerns, and that we are willing to take steps to make it happen.
“We have seen a huge expansion in technology over the past two decades, which has made communication across the Commonwealth much easier. Through the use of these new resources, we can ensure that everyone across York County, and the Commonwealth, have a strong voice in the House and Senate, without having 253 elected members. This move toward a smaller, and more efficient, legislature is a step in the right direction and a move into the future.”
Both bills require a change to the state constitution, meaning the Legislature will need to approve them in two consecutive sessions. If that happens, voters will have a chance to weigh in through a referendum.
