HARRISBURG – Earlier this week, in recognition of the 150th anniversary of the death of our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, the Pennsylvania state House approved my House resolution commemorating the date and acknowledging Lincoln’s distinguished life of public service and indelible leadership during an era of great national crisis.
“Lincoln was one of this country’s greatest presidents, who rose to greatness during one of the most difficult times in our nation’s history – the Civil War,” said Baker. “His leadership and legacy are an inspiration, and I was proud to sponsor a resolution honoring him and commemorating the anniversary of his passing on April 15, 1865.”
One of America’s largest outpourings of national grief occurred when Abraham Lincoln died on April 15, 1865. One week later, on April 21, his funeral train steamed out of Washington, D.C., stopping in the Pennsylvania cities of York, Harrisburg and Philadelphia, for what became one of most historic train journeys in American history. Lincoln’s open casket was placed in state at the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from the evening of April 21 through the morning of April 22.
To honor the life and leadership of Lincoln, this week in the state Capitol there were several special events, including the display of several rare Lincoln artifacts along with an exact replica of his coffin.
