HARRISBURG – The state House today concurred on a bill authored by state Rep. Will Tallman (R-Adams/Cumberland) that would benefit survivors of members of the military or first responders.
House Bill 152 now awaits Gov. Tom Wolf signing it into law.
“I was contacted by the mother of a law enforcement officer who was killed in the line of duty,” said Tallman. “She pointed out an inconsistency between state and federal law, which allows three years for survivors to file for death benefits. I proposed the change with my bill, which would amend the Pennsylvania Emergency and Law Enforcement Personnel Death Benefits Act and bring it in line with federal statute.”
House Bill 152 would extend the filing period for the benefit under state law from 90 days to four years. Tallman is calling on the governor to sign the legislation into law before this Tuesday, April 28, as the window for the constituent who brought this issue to his attention closes on that date as the law presently stands.
Tallman also reminds area veterans of his monthly outreach events at his Abbottstown district office, which is located at 282 West King St.
“A representative from the Pennsylvania DAV (Disabled American Veterans) office visits my Abbottstown district office the second Tuesday of every month from 9:30 a.m. to noon,” Tallman added. “This is a great opportunity for the men and women who have served our country to ask specific questions or inquire about programs that may be available to them.”
