HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania’s more than 4,500 local government bodies, and the public servants who help run them, were honored today by the House of Representatives, said Rep. Kate Harper (R-Montgomery), chairman of the House Local Government Committee.
House Resolution 95, sponsored by Harper, designates the week of April 13-17 as Local Government Week and April 15 as Local Government Day in Pennsylvania.
“In many places, our local government partners serve with little or no compensation and some expense to themselves as they willingly ensure that every citizen has a voice in how their communities are funded and run,” Harper said. “Often, after working a full day at their day jobs, they go to the municipal building at night to hold zoning hearings, to balance their budgets, to listen to their citizens, and to chart a course for the future for themselves and their neighbors.”
Pennsylvania is home to more than 2,500 townships, boroughs and cities and one incorporated town; 67 counties, 1,500 authorities and 500 school districts.
House Resolution 95 passed the House unanimously.
