HARRISBURG – Rep. Joe Hackett (R-Delaware) today joined colleagues, law enforcement officials and families of crime victims in the Capitol to support a House resolution calling on Gov. Tom Wolf to reverse his recent suspension of the death penalty.
“Instead of working with the Legislature to address his concerns with capital punishment in Pennsylvania, the governor acted rashly and ignored all constitutional provisions regarding separation of powers,” Hackett said.
On Feb. 13, Wolf granted a reprieve to convicted murderer Terrance Williams, and in the process declared a moratorium on the death penalty.
“I’m here today on behalf of the families and friends of crime victims who will lack closure because of the governor’s actions,” said Hackett. “These individuals have already been to hell and back after losing a loved one and enduring the subsequent trial. Now, the governor is going to deny them justice by granting these heinous criminals a reprieve.”
“I’m not sure exactly who in the administration is misguiding the governor on these decisions, but if this is the kind of ‘fresh start’ he has in mind, then I anxiously await a speedy conclusion,” Hackett said.
The resolution,
House Resolution 143, has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee, of which Hackett is a member.
