HARRISBURG – As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, Rep. Kurt Masser (R-Columbia/Montour/Northumberland) made the following statement after Gov. Tom Wolf outlined his 2015-16 budget plan before a joint session of the General Assembly today:
“The governor and I share many of the same goals – quality education, good jobs, and affordable health care. The differing of opinions lies in how we get there. Pennsylvanians have been taxed enough. Our economy recovery has been sluggish at best, and I am concerned that these additional income and sales taxes will not only weaken our future growth but will destroy any advances we’ve made to this point.
“House Appropriations Chairman Bill Adolph said earlier today after the address, that the median income for families in Pennsylvania is about $52,000, and under this proposal, a family in that income range will pay several hundred more a year. That concerns me, as I know I have met with people who can barely afford to heat their home or put food on the table, let alone pay more taxes.
“As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I’ll be working with my colleagues over the next three weeks to look line by line at this proposal. At this point in time, this proposal is just a first draft, and I can imagine there will be many discussions and changes as we work through the spring to develop a final budget.”
