Title: House Rejects Midnight Amendment to Change Election Code

Oct. 05, 2023 / Embed

Elections must be free, fair, safe and secure; and election reforms are necessary to safeguard the future of our democracy. However, changes to our election code deserve thoughtful vetting and discussion, not to be rushed through at midnight the day before consideration by the full House. We must be more intentional when making important decisions like those laid out in Senate Bill 224. Thankfully, the bill was not approved by the House.

House Bill 1300 is Unconstitutional

Oct. 05, 2023 / Embed

At its core, House Bill 1300 was written to add a member of the Pennsylvania Long-Term Care Ombudsman’s Office to the Pennsylvania Long-Term Care Council. However, this piece of legislation has been amended beyond recognition. Among its biggest failures is sending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to Pennsylvania’s state-related universities, a move that constitutionally requires a two-thirds vote.

I did my best to convince my colleagues to vote against it.

Changing the date of the 2024 primary was a bad idea at this point in time to begin with, but House Democrats violated House rules to make it even worse, in the style of the 2005 midnight pay raise. Thankfully, the bill was overwhelmingly defeated.
