Corr Bill Aims to Prevent Welfare Fraud By Stopping Payments to Dead People

Sep. 19, 2017  Download

At a time when the commonwealth has a $2.1 billion budget deficit, state taxpayer money shouldn’t be wasted by handing out welfare payments to dead people. That’s the sentiment behind a bill introduced by state Rep. Michael Corr (R-Montgomery). The bill was generated in response to a report released last year by the Auditor General that the state Department of Human Services (DHS) provided nearly $700,000 in welfare benefits to at least 2,300 individuals who had been dead for 60 days. Rep. Corr said his bill would require DHS to increase the frequency of death records checks to ensure scarce state benefit dollars are more effectively utilized.

Rep. Heffley Comments on House Approval of a Revenue Plan to Complete Funding of the State Budget

Sep. 14, 2017  Download

The Pennsylvania House approved an amended state revenue plan on Wednesday that puts taxpayers first and does not require any increase in state taxes. The revenue plan authored by House Republicans is viewed as a financially responsible effort that not does not rely on additional state borrowing and calls for the utilization of existing funds in dormant state accounts to help balance the nearly $32 billion state budget. The amended revenue plan now returns to the Senate for consideration. Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon) offered his comments following passage of the legislation.
