A bipartisan group of House and Senate lawmakers announced a package of municipal debt reform legislation Wednesday in the state capitol aimed at helping to prevent local government officials from misusing public finance laws and jeopardizing the financial future of their municipalities. Rep. Frank Ryan (R-Lebanon), sponsor of one of the bills, said the four bill package would protect taxpayers from the financial missteps of inexperienced government officials.

A resolution calling for Pennsylvanians to examine their own contributions toward the stigmatization of disabled individuals was the topic of discussion at a press conference held in Harrisburg on Wednesday. Rep. Sheryl Delozier (R-Cumberland) is prime sponsor of House Resolution 324, which declares May 10, 2017 as “Annual Stigma Awareness Day.” Additionally, Delozier helped to unveil a documentary film entitled “What Are You Thinking?” The intent of the film is to provoke public discussion about how people are conditioned to think about those with disabilities.

Legislation designed to change the way the state allocates money for family planning has been unveiled in Harrisburg. At a press conference on Tuesday, Rep. Judy Ward (R-Blair) announced that she is authoring a bill to prioritize public funds for women’s health. Rep. Ward said her bill will make healthcare more accessible for women in rural areas of the Commonwealth.

Paul Schemel (R-Franklin) announced that he is co-sponsoring legislation that would prioritize public funding for women’s health. Schemel said his bill would allow healthcare providers which at one time only provided diagnostic services to treat conditions as well.

Legislation that would bring the state of Pennsylvania into compliance with the federal REAL ID Act, while offering citizens a choice in the form of identification they prefer, was approved unanimously Monday by the House State Government Committee. Committee member Rep. Kristin Phillips-Hill (R-York) said she felt the bill does a good job of meeting the need for compliance with federal ID standards, while providing an option for those Pennsylvanians who prefer the current form of driver’s license or photo identification card.
