Legislation designed to ensure that thousands of the Commonwealth’s seasonal workers are eligible for unemployment compensation benefits was recently signed into law by Gov. Wolf in Harrisburg. Act 144 will also bring significant reform to the unemployment system, strengthening its solvency and bolstering its continued viability. Rep. Lee James (R-Venango & Butler) said this legislation will benefit seasonal workers and the companies that need to retain quality employees, as well as safeguard Pennsylvania against future economic instability.

Reed Says New Unemployment Compensation Reforms Will Help Thousands of PA Workers and Save the System $1.5 Billion

Legislation that will bring comprehensive reforms to the state’s unemployment compensation system was signed into law today by Gov. Tom Wolf. House Majority Leader Dave Reed (R-Indiana County) said the new law, formerly House Bill 319, strengthens the solvency of the Unemployment Compensation Trust Fund and makes thousands of laid off seasonal workers eligible for benefits, while saving the system as much as $1.5 billion in coming years.

On Wednesday, a package of legislation designed to arrest the growing opioid abuse epidemic in Pennsylvania was signed into law by Gov. Tom Wolf. The legislation will address drug availability and access as well as treatment for those who have become dependent on opioid medications. Rep. Matt Baker (R-Bradford &Tioga), chairman of the House Health Committee, said he was glad to see quick action on these bipartisan bills to help address the issue of opioid drug addiction and is looking forward to more legislative action to deal with this crisis in the coming year.

Brown (R-Monroe/Pike), prime sponsor of House Bill 1699, said her bill will help to prevent overprescription of opioid medication and keep dangerous drugs off the street.

Stephens Comments on First Wine Sales at Montgomeryville Wegmans

Legislation recently took effect to begin dismantling the Commonwealth’s monopoly on wine and spirit sales within the state. Due to the new law, wine is now being sold in Pennsylvania grocery stores for the first time since prohibition. Rep. Todd Stephens (R-Montgomery) joined Wegmans officials on Friday for the grand opening of wine sales at its Montgomeryville store. Stephens said the move toward privatization will only bring better options for consumers in PA.

Milne Comments on First Wine Sales at Wegmans in Downingtown

Due to the new law, wine is now being sold in Pennsylvania grocery stores for the first time since prohibition. Rep. Duane Milne (R-Chester) joined Wegmans officials on Friday for the grand opening of wine sales at its Downingtown store. Milne said state government should not be in the business of promoting alcohol sales.
